Saguenay−Lac-Saint-Jean is a geographical area that is isolated from the rest of agricultural Quebec. Located more than 150 kilometres north of Quebec’s main population clusters, it (along with the Abitibi-Témiscamingue and Côte-Nord [North Shore] regions) makes up the northern limit of the province’s agricultural land.

The main elements that characterise the Saguenay−Lac-Saint-Jean agri-food sector are stated in the Northern Agriculture Excellence Niche Development Strategy, i.e. its northern latitude and northern climate. These particular factors bring together regional agri-food industry role players, who work hand-in-hand to prioritise and enhance the products that are in line with the excellence niche.
